What goes into the maturity figure

The maturity value is what the bank credits to your account on the date the FD matures. It is calculated as P × (1 + r/n)n×t, where n is the number of compounding periods per year. In India, n is almost always 4 (quarterly), though a few co-operative and small finance banks compound monthly or annually. The compounding frequency you select on the bank application form is binding for the whole tenure, so double-check it before you sign.

On the maturity date the bank either credits the maturity amount to your linked savings account or rolls it over into a fresh FD at the prevailing rate (the latter is the default for most net-banking FDs). If you do not need the cash, manual rollover at the counter sometimes fetches a slightly higher rate during a special-tenure window like 444 or 555 days — worth asking before auto-renewal kicks in.
